South Wavebreak Island Channel Maintenance Dredging

Overview of Project

This project aims to return the North, South and South Wave Break Island (NSWI) navigation channels in the Southern Broadwater to their minimum safe design depths by removing identified shoaling.  Dredged sand will be used to mitigate severe erosion on the northern Wave Break Island rock wall and eastern beach as well as on the Spit ‘Finger’. Excess material will be placed at Main Beach and material from the North Channel will be deposited offshore from Surfers Paradise.

Scope of Works

Neumann Contractors were engaged by the Gold Coast Waterways Authority to dredge sand from the South Wave Break Island Channel to reinstate the required navigable depth.

The project was successfully completed with Neumann Contractors designed and built 450mm cutter suction dredge the Nu Endeavour with the dredged sand being used to replenish the beach on the eastern side of Wave Break Island.

Outcome

The dredging was completed on time and on budget.

The Nu Endeavour cutter suction dredge has also worked on the following projects:

  • Townsville Marine Project,
  • Bundaberg Burnett River Dredging,
  • Bundaberg Port Dredging,
  • GPC – Tug Berth & Channel Dredging,
  • Sydney Water Desalination Project,
  • Penrith Lakes – Tailings Dredging,
  • Maroochy Replenishment Dredging.
